“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.” — Psalm 1:1–2
There was a time in my life where I didn’t realize how much my surroundings were shaping me.
It started small.
Walking in certain circles.
Standing in places I shouldn’t have been.
Sitting with people who were influencing me in the wrong direction.
I didn’t think much of it at the time, it just felt normal.
But looking back, I can see exactly what was happening.
Step by step, I was drifting.
That’s what stood out to me when I read this Psalm. The progression: walk, stand, sit. It doesn’t happen all at once. It’s gradual. Subtle. Easy to justify in the moment.
And before you know it, you’re further from God than you ever intended to be.
I’ve lived that.
But I’ve also experienced the other side.
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” — Psalm 1:3
Everything began to change when I started spending real time with God.
Not just when I needed something, but daily.
In His Word.
In prayer.
In stillness.
At first, nothing around me changed.
But something in me did.
I started becoming more steady.
More grounded.
Less shaken by everything happening around me.
Like a tree being planted.
And that’s the key - planted.
Not moving with every circumstance.
Not reacting to every emotion.
But rooted.
Psalm 1 doesn’t say the tree avoids every season, it says it bears fruit in its season. That means there are still dry moments, still waiting seasons, still times where growth isn’t visible.
But because of where it’s planted, it continues to live. To grow. To produce.
I’ve seen that in my own life.
“Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.” — Psalm 1:4
I know what it feels like to live like that too.
Unstable.
Easily influenced.
Moved by whatever situation or emotion came my way.
No real foundation.
That’s what life looks like without being rooted in God - it’s unpredictable, inconsistent, and exhausting.
“Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” — Psalm 1:5
At some point, everything is revealed.
The life that’s rooted stands.
The life that isn’t… doesn’t.
That’s not something to fear, it’s something to understand.
Because God is always inviting us into something better.
“For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.” — Psalm 1:6
That’s what gives me peace now.
Knowing that when I choose to stay rooted in Him, I’m not walking alone.
He sees it.
He guides it.
He covers it.
I’ve lived both paths.
And I can say with full confidence, the difference is everything.
Takeaway:
A life rooted in God produces stability, growth, and fruit - while a life apart from Him leads to instability and drift.
Prayer:
God, help us recognize the direction we’re walking in. If we’ve been drifting, draw us back. Plant us firmly in You, and give us a desire to stay rooted in Your Word day and night. Let our lives reflect the fruit that comes from being close to You. Amen.
The direction of life is shaped by what is allowed to influence it. Drifting happens slowly, but so does growth. When rooted in God, stability, clarity, and fruit begin to follow.
